Every day, police officers across the Netherlands dedicate themselves to serving their communities. They handle traffic, respond to incidents, and make sure people feel safe — but sometimes, they go far beyond their basic duties.
Recently, a police officer in Rotterdam was called to a local bank after reports of a “disturbance.” When the officer arrived, he didn’t find a criminal — but rather an elderly man who was visibly upset.
The man had all his bank cards and papers mixed up, and after a long search, he finally found his identification card — only to discover it had expired. According to bank policy, they couldn’t allow him to withdraw money without valid ID. Frustrated and embarrassed, the elderly man raised his voice, and staff decided to call the police for assistance.
When Officer Tom de Vries arrived, he immediately realized that the man wasn’t being aggressive — he was simply confused and needed help. Instead of treating it as a disturbance, Officer de Vries decided to help him sort things out.
According to a statement from the Politie Rotterdam,
Earlier today, officers responded to a call at a bank regarding an elderly customer who appeared to be causing a disturbance. Upon arrival, it became clear that the 91-year-old gentleman was simply trying to access his own account, but his ID card had expired. Because of bank regulations, staff were unable to process his request.
Officer de Vries offered to drive the man to the gemeentehuis (city hall) so he could renew his identification. After helping him through the renewal process, the officer stopped by a local stationery shop in Delfshaven to buy a small wallet so the man could keep all his cards neatly organized.
Once everything was in order, the officer took him back to the bank — where the man was finally able to withdraw his money. He thanked Officer de Vries warmly before heading home, visibly relieved.
The story quickly spread on social media, where people praised the officer’s kindness.
One person wrote:
“Respect for Officer de Vries! This is what community service really means — helping people when they need it most.”
Another commented:
“This is beautiful. He didn’t have to do all that, but he did it anyway. That’s true compassion.”
When asked about the situation, Officer de Vries simply said:
“I just did what felt right. The man clearly needed help — and sometimes, a bit of patience and understanding can make someone’s whole day better.”
